NYC Style Spot + Inspiration
Two weekends ago I attended the Modern Vintage show at the Randolph Street Market, an event that focused exclusively on vintage clothing, jewelry and accessories. My friend Sarah of Zzouzi Vintage and I tried on hats, drooled over huge statement necklaces and chatted with our friends who were selling at the market.Mr Modern's booth is always a standout at every flea market, he carries a little bit of everything and excels at presenting fresh and unique merchandise. The photo above and the next 8 photos are from his booth.I actually purchased 2 rings at the show and was tempted to buy the silver and turquoise floral ring at Mr. Modern's booth.Sarah tried on many hats at the show including this 1950s fascinator in Mr. Modern's booth.HUGE necklaces were everywhere at the show and Sarah couldn't resist trying on this massive beaded Egyptian inspired collar.Egyptian/Egyptian Revival was also a trend that we kept seeing, I've always been a fan of this time period.A multitude of lockets above and statement bangles below seen in the booth shared by Estate Chicago & Tangerine Vintage.I collect 1930s & 1940s celluloid plastic Cracker Jack charms so was pleased to find these necklaces covered in charms. They're definitely a piece of folk art. In Leah's booth I came across a Cracker Jack sweater (below). Can't you see it paired with a pair of high waist shorts?A smashing 1950s circle skirt perfect for spring spotted in Leah's booth. My friend Niki of Bombshell Shocked Vintage had some of the most unique skirts I'd ever seen including the one above with appliqued playing cards and the sweet dance skirt below. If I could re-do my high school prom I'd wear a classic vintage formal dress, like the one that Sarah is posing with in Jen's booth. Look at the lace and the ruffles!Karyn of Dethrose Vintage was rockin' a gorgeous sundress that she had made especially for her using a 1950s pattern and period fabric.Trying on hats in Karyn's booth. My favorite dress in Karyn's booth, I liked the chambray fabric and clean lines.A novelty print men's shirt and "Hawaiian Diamonds" jewelry set seen in Vintage Baubles & Bits booth.I'd love to make a skirt or dress with heart-shaped pockets!I came across this heart print dress and thought it would be fantastic for Valentine's Day.Sarah actually has a degree in millinery and makes her own hats so I'm always intrigued by what she has to say about the construction of vintage hats. Our friend Maranda of Persnickety Vintage was helping another vendor at the show but she'll be selling on her own at the next Randolph Street Market. The flea market is held indoors during the winter at Plumbers Hall an indoor space that features a grand staircase and 1930s WPA- era murals like the one I'm posing with above and below.I only came away with a few finds this time, I'm not sure how I resisted all the jewelry and clothing! Of course I snagged a locket, this one is oversized so at first I thought it was a compact.A 1950s/early 1960s lucite cameo pin and a long necklace made up of glass beads, not sure how old it is but I liked the deep emerald green color.I went a little crazy with the rings this time and bought a square wooden ring from Dethrose Vintage and a silvertone Modernist ring from another vendor (sadly don't know the store name). The little white ring looks to be carved bone and was only $2 from Weber's Antiques. It's rare that I buy clothing at the markets (I'm lazy and don't want to try things on) but the color and pattern of this 1950s dress spoke to me.My last purchase was a little beaded coin purse in the shape of a high heel shoe! I think it's from the 1950s.
If you're curious about Sarah or I's outfits you can see more details in my last post.
