Your Vintage Weekend : Events & Markets in Chicago
parrothatWelcome to Your Vintage Weekend, a guide to what flea markets, classic film screenings and other events are happening this weekend in the city of Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. I'm vigilant about checking events listings and the local papers every week to see what would be of interest to a vintage lifestyle enthusiast and I hope to pass on this information to you, The Thriftaholic reader. Please send me tips via thriftaholic (at) yahoo.com for upcoming events.

Check back soon for a $50 giveaway from the Savers thrift store chain!Cat's Pajamas, a vintage clothing, jewelry and and textile show, kicks off tonight in Elgin. 75 vendors take over two floors of the Hemmens Cultural Center and they offer rare items like Civil War-era and Victorian clothing as well as more wearable pieces from the 1930s-the 1970s. At last years show I was particularly impressed by the quality of jewelry (including stacks and stacks of Bakelite), wide variety of cocktail hats and booths that were dedicatedly solely to men's vintage clothing and accessories. Vendors come across the country to sell at this show and thus there's a range of prices-- along with the museum-quality garments there are also deals like 1950s dresses under $30 and brooches for as low as $5. Check out the article I wrote on last February's show to get an idea of what you might see this year.

September is their last outdoor/indoor market so it will be the last weekend for open air vintage shopping. Since it's a 2-day show, the 200 vendors go all out to merchandise their booths. There's always plenty of Mid Century Modern and industrial decor and furniture, heaps of vintage and antique jewelry and clothing from the 1920s-1980s. Keep an eye out for a bright orange camper when you're there, that's Lost Girls Vintage, a mobile shop based in Chicago. I've posted several times about Randolph Street Market in the past here on Thriftaholic, check out last month's article to see what you might find this weekend.
