Behind the scenes video of Ralph Lauren Installation
So this is what I'm all about on Republic Of Chic when there is talk about Gareth Pugh showing a video for his SS 2011 collection instead of on the runway or Prashant Verma's killer digital prints or Vogue Digital magazine's incredible gifs or video tutorials on how to tie scarves or taking in the Varun Sardana SS 2011 collection to the audio of Avial or even lame graphics installed outfit posts such as The Aviator; it is the coming together of fashion, art and technology for a complete audio-visual sensory experience that really inspires me to keep coming back here with new posts everyday. Its why I think blogs and online fashion magazines as a medium have unlimited potential for creativity and insanity! ;)
You can imagine my joy when I finally saw this Ralph Lauren '4-D' installation! Heaps had been written about Ralph Lauren celebrating 10 years of 'digital innovation' with this piece (their first ECommerce store went live 10 years ago) but to watch the video was just something else. This sensory experience - complete with sound and apparently even a mist of their new fragrance sprayed on the street over the crowds some six minutes into the show is just my idea of fashion embracing technology and moving with the times already. I can't wait to see this happen to Indian fashion! Below are a few excerpts from Suzy Menkes for New York Times:
"Before a thousand eyes, the gracious Ralph Lauren store will seem to vanish from sight. Then, in the empty space, the mansion on London’s New Bond Street is to re-emerge brick by brick, until the facade opens, to be filled by giant, striding models, four stories tall, their rose-patterned skirts then morphing into beds of flowers."
Do take out a bit of time to watch Susie Bubble's video for a truer perspective of the show from the crowd. It's the one I enjoyed the most! The following videos are official ones from the Ralph Lauren website from both London and New York. For the very curious, watch the last 'making of' video. You'll love it just as I did. Here are a few insights into the hard core tech bit of the show:
"David Lauren offers to the public a futuristic vision in which “architectural mapping” technology is used on the store facade, creating what the brand calls a “4-D” experience. The sound and light show is created by superimposing optical effects created by pinpointed pixels of light over a projected 3-D replica of the building."
