When I was young my best friend and I used to raid our mother’s wardrobes and dress up in their clothes, putting on fashion parades for the neighborhood. I would demand my mother take photographs and video tape our performances. I even managed to rope my little brothers into modeling and would dress them up in dresses, which they did willingly, much to their horror now.
Only recently have I begun to raid my mother’s wardrobe again. There was a certain age bracket where it was deemed uncool to wear your mother’s clothes but now vintage items are creeping into our wardrobes and being paired up with our designer labels.
As well as returning to my mother’s wardrobe, I’ve also recently developed the hobby of op shopping, thrifting through vintage market stalls and online.
I’ve decided to put together my top 5 list of vintage stores for those of you wanting to go on a thrifting escapade of your own to find quirky and pre-loved pieces to add to your wardrobe.
1. Vintage Lover
A personal favourite of mine, founded by my friend Jaharn Giles. Jaharn currently lives in London and shares her love of travel and vintage pieces by trekking the UK and Europe for one off gems to share with her Vintage Lover fans. Jaharn has just released her fifth collection, 'Crystallised’ which was inspired by the 70’s.
2. Spanish Moss Vintage
Spanish Moss Vintage is an American based online store which sources and sells unique one off vintage items of women’s clothing.
3. Nasty Gal Vintage
Nasty Gal is another American online store which offers on-trend vintage accessories and apparel. They are also well known for their unique new designer pieces.
4. Lenni Vintage
I only came across this online vintage store yesterday via facebook. This Australian store specialises in plenty of one off hot vintage denim shorts, some of which I’ve already purchased to debut at Future Music Festival.
5. Woolloongabba Antique Centre
The Woolloongabba Antique Centre, located in Brisbane, stocks a large range of retro clothing from the 40’s to the 80’s, along with antique homewares. I picked up a sequined vintage top and denim high waisted shorts late last year for Parklife for $28AU! Bargain!!!
