The idea rose to popularity in the seventeenth century, usually reserved for royalty or the wealthier classes. Although the true definition of a parure means that the pieces making up the suite should be worn together, the modular quality allowed one to mix and match depending on the outfit and look of the day in later years. A parure or complete set can be made up of two to five pieces (two bracelets, necklace, earrings and brooch) and a demi-parure refers to a collection of pieces which are only part of the original collection. Here you see Betty in necklace-earring demi parures in mostly classic double pearl strands for the day and more intricate ones for night, Bethany in rhinestone sets, Bobby wearing her matching bracelets over her gorgeous gloves and Joan being boardroom chic with a brooch and matching earrings.

Of course, in India where jewellery holds a special place in women's hearts, we've all commonly seen beautiful intricate 'parures' with sometimes seven or more pieces! In addition to necklace, earrings, bracelets and bangles, nose rings, saree brooches, elaborate bindis and maang tilas (forehead and hair adornments) are also matched to each other and this is just to speak of a few adorments waist up! ;)

When you find yourself experimenting with 50s or 60s styling, a foray into your Mom's jewellery case can be quite rewarding. Remember this? PS. It's a shame I can't find more images of Trudy Campbell or Jane Sterling, I find them to be exceptionally styled!
